Honey of Uruguay

Geographical location and honey production

Uruguay is a South American country, located between Parallel 30 and 35 of South Latitude and Meridians 53 and 58 of West Longitude. It is bordered by Argentine and Brasil and the Atlantic Ocean at the South. It has an area of 176.215 square km, home to 3 millon people, with a density of 19/km2. The landscape features mostly rolling plains and low hills (maximum height 513 mts over sea level). The climate is temperate wet with four pronounced seasons. The main economical activity of the country is agriculture and cattle-raising over natural pasture basis while Eucalyptus and Pine afforestation is taking an increasing importance nowadays. All these activities are oriented to the exportation. In summary, the low industrialization and population density, together with the natural pasture basis of the cattle-raising, make the whole country be excelent for apiculture.

Uruguay produces 12.000 tons of honey annually: 10% is consumed in the internal market and 90% is exported. In the prairies zones we produce multifloral honeys with excelent flavor and colours varying from White to Amber (25 mm to 85 mm) according to the zone and the year climatic conditions. In the North and Northeast zones there are wide afforestations of Eucalyptus Grandis used by beekeepers to produce large amounts of monofloral honeys ranging from Extra Light Amber to Amber colours (50 mm to more than 114 mm).
